Dr. Rachelle Rogers Elected to National Leadership
Dr. Rachelle Rogers, Associate Clinical Professor of mathematics education, is on a fast track to the top post in the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), a national organization of school and university faculty who provide professional preparation for teacher candidates. ATE promotes quality teacher education through both exemplary clinical practice and research.
Rogers was elected this spring by members in a nationwide ballot as second vice president for 2020-21. That role will transition into first vice president for 2021-22, and Rogers will serve as president of the organization in 2022-23. Rogers also serves as coordinator of Baylor’s middle school certification program in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. She supervises candidates in their field experiences, as well as teaches the middle school mathematics methods courses in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. “I am thrilled to have a voice on a national stage,” Rogers said. “COVID-19 is obviously changing the face of teaching; teachers — and those who educate teachers — are seeing unprecedented challenges. Dr. Phil Nichols Named Editor
Dr. Phil Nichols was named editor for the English/Language Arts section of the journal Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE). Nichols is Assistant Professor of literacy education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, and his teaching and research examine how science and technology condition the ways we practice, teach, and talk about literacy — and the implications for equitable education and student flourishing. His work has appeared in Educational Researcher, Teachers College Record, Research in the Teaching of English, Reading Research Quarterly, and Learning, Media, and Technology, as well as popular media outlets like The Atlantic.
Dr. Kelly Johnston Receives National Dissertation Award
Dr. Kelly Johnston, Assistant Professor in the Baylor School of Education, won the 2020 John Laska Distinguished Dissertation Award in Teaching from the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum (AATC) for her recent dissertation research. Johnston joined the Baylor SOE faculty in 2018 and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.
Johnston’s dissertation, (Re)Imagining Possibilities for Youth in Schools: A Rhizomatic Exploration of Youths’ Affective Engagement with Literacy, focuses on youths’ different forms of literacy engagement in the classroom and how these understandings can be used to rethink literacy teaching and learning in and out of schools. Johnston’s dissertation was part of her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching, which she earned in 2018 at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She previously earned her M.Ed. in Reading Education from Texas State University in 2011 and her B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Baylor in 2004.
Johnston said the research was “an opportunity to think about how we can explore literacy to create a more humanizing and enjoyable experience for students.” READ MORE...
Faculty and Alumni in Gifted Education Publish Book
The fifth edition of Methods and Materials for Teaching the Gifted is edited by and features the work of several Baylor faculty members and alumni. Lead editor Dr. Jenny Robins said the new edition is completely revised and updated to provide a comprehensive look at current research and best practices in the field of gifted education. Other topics covered include gifted identification, twice-exceptionality, diverse learners, curriculum design, differentiating instruction, developing critical and creative thinking, and encouraging talent development.
