Every Gift Makes a Difference
Through significant gifts and scholarships, our alumni and friends make it possible for us to do important work that impacts the lives of students and the people we serve. Gifts from supporters, whether a legacy gift or a small one-time donation, provide for our future successes.
This school year, the School of Education will award more than $500,000 in merit-based and need-based undergraduate scholarships. Nearly 100 endowed scholarships are awarded solely by the SOE to students studying education.
The SOE has benefitted from several significant gifts, some made decades ago and others as recently as 2018.
A gift from Fred M. Hale and Edith Hale marked the first gift of $1 million to the School of Education. The Fred M. and Edith Hale Professorship and the Center for Educational Leadership was established in 1991 with the endowment gift. Fred Hale and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Faye Moore, further established an endowment in honor of Dr. James L. Williamson, an SOE faculty member and later, an interim dean. The professorship is dedicated to conducting research and developing creative strategies for preparing new leaders for American public education.
After establishing a significant endowed scholarship for undergraduate students, Don and Janette Carpenter of Houston in 2017 launched the Carpenter Family School of Education Embedded Global Classroom Endowed Fund, Baylor’s first fully funded study-abroad embedded classroom. The study-abroad program to Querétaro, Mexico, allows students to integrate classroom learning with an immersive international field experience.
A generous gift from Lynda and Robert Copple of Frisco, Texas, established an endowed chair for Christians in School Leadership and expanded the reach of the Center for Christian Education, a center dedicated to educational improvement and values-driven leadership for Christian educational leaders.
Other significant gifts include the Barbara Jo and Robert E. Johnson endowment; the Conwell Gilmore Strickland Jr. Scholarship; the Strickland endowment; and the Sharon Daly Mansfield Endowed Fund in Education, established by Ted and Sue Getterman. Students in the School of Education are dedicated and driven.
