Celebrating the Centennial
Birthday Party
March 22 marked the actual date in 1919 when Baylor's Board of Trustees voted to create a separate academic unit, the School of Education. The SOE celebrated with a birthday party focused on the future -- our students -- in the courtyard of Marrs McLean Science Building.
Marrs McLean Timeline
The stairwell and landings of Marrs McLean Science Building have been transformed to celebrate the history of the School of Education. An informative timeline wends its way up the staircase -- along with corresponding photos on the glass panels -- and large photos of the former homes of the SOE on each landing.
Dr Pepper Hour
Special events to celebrate the School of Education Centennial started in January, when the SOE hosted the university-wide Dr Pepper Hour on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Barfield Drawing Room. It was great to share our history with friends from across the campus.
Pop-Up Centennial Giveaways
You never know when a celebration will erupt in 2019! The SOE is hosting "pop-up" giveaways, when we share 100 gifts. In January, it was 100 cups of hot cocoa offered to passersby on Fountain Mall.
February's pop-up giveaway celebrated Valentine's Day, of course. We gave away 100 carnations in the SUB on Feb. 14.
Dr. Maria Franquiz Lectures
Among the insights offered by Dr. Maria Franquiz at the Centennial Lecture on Feb. 19 is the importance of culturally relevant literature choices -- for all students.
During her visit to Waco and Baylor, nationally known bilingual scholar Dr. Maria Franquiz also spoke to educators at the Region 12 Education Service Center, which serves 49 school districts in 12 counties.
